2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Coil Cold Rolled 0.5mm-5mm High Strength S32205 Dual Phase Microstructure SS Coil

Our 2205 (UNS S32205/S31803) duplex stainless steel coil combines the best attributes of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels through a carefully balanced dual-phase microstructure of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. This unique metallurgical architecture delivers yield strength approximately double that of conventional 304/316 austenitic grades while maintaining excellent toughness, superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and good general corrosion resistance. The high strength-to-weight ratio enables significant reductions in material thickness and structural weight for pressure-containing equipment, translating directly to lower material costs, reduced fabrication and welding consumables, and decreased transportation expenses. The 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo nominal composition with controlled nitrogen addition (0.14-0.20%) provides a PREN of 34-35, substantially exceeding 316L (PREN ~24-26). The ferrite phase provides high strength and SCC resistance, while the austenite phase contributes ductility, toughness, and general corrosion resistance. Our 2205 coils are manufactured through EAF with AOD refining for precise nitrogen control, continuous casting with optimized secondary cooling to avoid sigma phase precipitation, hot rolling under controlled parameters, solution annealing at 1020-1100C followed by rapid water quenching, and cold rolling with bright annealing. Every heat is rigorously tested for ferrite content (ASTM E562), intermetallic phase absence (ASTM A923 Method C), and mechanical properties including impact toughness.

Key Features
  • Twice the Yield Strength of 304/316: With minimum 0.2% yield strength of 450 MPa (65 ksi), 2205 provides more than double the design strength of 304 (205 MPa) and over 2.6 times that of 316L (170 MPa). This strength advantage allows 50% or greater reduction in material thickness for pressure vessel applications governed by yield-limited design criteria, substantially reducing material cost, fabrication labor, and installed weight.
  • Superior Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance: Chloride SCC is the primary failure mechanism of austenitic stainless steels in hot chloride environments and has caused catastrophic failures of 304/316 equipment. 2205 is virtually immune to chloride SCC at temperatures up to 150C in neutral chloride solutions, a property derived from the ferrite phase which mechanically arrests crack propagation across the two-phase microstructure.
  • Excellent Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance: With PREN of 34-35, 2205 provides pitting resistance significantly exceeding 316L. Critical pitting temperature in 6% FeCl3 per ASTM G48 Method A exceeds 35C for properly solution annealed material, compared to approximately 20-25C for 316L. This makes 2205 suitable for seawater-cooled heat exchangers operating above ambient temperature and desalination plant evaporator stages handling warm concentrated brine.
  • Good Weldability with Appropriate Procedures: 2205 is readily weldable using GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, and SAW processes with matching or over-alloyed filler metals (typically ER2209). Key requirements include controlled heat input (0.5-2.5 kJ/mm for GTAW), interpass temperature maximum 150C, and adequate shielding gas coverage (argon + 2% nitrogen for GTAW to compensate for nitrogen loss). With properly qualified procedures, the welded joint matches parent material properties.
  • Cost-Effective High-Performance Material: The nickel content of 2205 (4.5-6.5%) is approximately half that of 304 (8-10.5%), providing greater price stability. When weight reduction from higher design strength is factored into total installed cost analysis, 2205 equipment frequently proves cost-competitive with or even less expensive than 316L solutions, while offering substantially superior performance in chloride service.
  • High Fatigue Strength for Dynamic Loading: The elevated static strength translates directly to superior fatigue performance. The fatigue endurance limit at 10^7 cycles (fully reversed bending) is approximately 400 MPa for 2205 compared to 240 MPa for 304, providing nearly 70% higher allowable stress amplitude for dynamically loaded components in offshore structural applications.
  • Good Abrasion and Erosion-Corrosion Resistance: The high hardness of 2205 (typically 25-30 HRC in solution annealed condition, compared to 75-85 HRB for annealed 304) provides substantially better resistance to abrasive wear and erosion-corrosion damage. In slurry piping, pump impellers, and heat exchanger tube inlets, 2205 demonstrates significantly lower metal loss rates than austenitic grades, extending equipment service life in abrasive service.
