201 Austenitic Stainless Steel Coil Cold Rolled 2B 0.3mm-4mm Economical 17Cr-4Ni-Mn Alternative to 304 Grade SS Coil

Our 201 (UNS S20100) austenitic stainless steel coil represents an engineering-driven cost optimization that partially substitutes expensive nickel with manganese and nitrogen while maintaining the austenitic crystal structure essential for excellent formability and toughness. With a nominal composition of 17% chromium, 4% nickel, 6% manganese, and controlled nitrogen addition, 201 achieves a stable austenitic microstructure at room temperature through the combined austenite-stabilizing effect of manganese and nitrogen compensating for reduced nickel content. This metallurgical strategy provides approximately 70-80% of the corrosion resistance of 304 at 50-60% of the raw material cost. Our 201 coils are manufactured through EAF melting with AOD refining for precise nitrogen control, continuous casting, hot rolling, annealing and pickling, and final cold rolling with bright annealing. The 2B finish provides a smooth uniform surface suitable for general fabrication. 201 has gained substantial market acceptance in kitchenware, food service equipment, architectural interior trim, automotive trim components, and general sheet metal fabrication. Each coil is fully traceable from original heat to finished product with complete EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill certification.

Key Features
  • Cost-Effective Austenitic Structure: By reducing nickel from 8-10.5% (304) to approximately 4% and substituting with manganese (5.5-7.5%) and nitrogen (up to 0.25%), 201 achieves the desired austenitic FCC crystal structure at substantially lower alloy cost. Manganese acts as an austenite stabilizer at 80-90% lower cost per unit weight than nickel, while nitrogen contributes both austenite stabilization and solid solution strengthening.
  • Good Formability for Medium Drawing: The fully austenitic microstructure provides good ductility with minimum elongation of 40% (A50) in the annealed condition, enabling moderate to deep drawing operations without intermediate annealing. While the work hardening rate is higher than 304, 201 can be successfully formed into sinks, bowls, cookware, and appliance bodies using properly designed tooling with adequate lubrication and blank holder force optimization.
  • Non-Magnetic in Annealed Condition: Like 304, the stable austenitic structure of 201 is non-magnetic (relative permeability <1.02) in the fully solution annealed condition. This property is essential for applications where magnetic interference must be avoided, including MRI-compatible medical equipment components, electronic device housings, and sensitive instrumentation enclosures.
  • Decent General Corrosion Resistance: With 17% chromium, 201 provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, mild chemical environments, and food acids at ambient temperatures. Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) demonstrates approximately 150-200 hours to first red rust in 5% NaCl neutral fog, sufficient for indoor applications and protected outdoor exposure. The slightly lower chromium and significantly lower nickel compared to 304 results in reduced resistance to reducing acids and chloride pitting.
  • Wide Application in Fabricated Consumer Products: 201 has become the standard grade for a wide range of high-volume consumer products including kitchen sinks, range hoods, food preparation equipment, catering trays, hollowware, tableware, and decorative trim. Its adoption is driven by acceptable corrosion resistance for the intended service environment, good formability enabling efficient manufacturing, and cost structure supporting competitive retail pricing.
  • Stable Supply Chain with Multiple Mill Sources: 201 is produced by a large number of stainless steel mills worldwide, creating a deep and competitive supply base. Standard mill sizes and specifications are widely stocked, reducing lead times. The grade is fully covered by international standards including ASTM A240, EN 10088-2, and JIS G4305, providing consistent specification framework for procurement and quality assurance.
  • Recyclable and Environmentally Responsible: Like all stainless steels, 201 is 100% recyclable at end-of-life with no degradation in properties. Scrap value provides economic incentive for recovery with production typically incorporating 60-80% recycled content. Lower nickel content compared to 304 further reduces the environmental footprint associated with nickel mining and refining, contributing to improved lifecycle sustainability metrics.
